Repair, recoat or start over?
If the existing coating is still firmly bonded and only the top layer is worn, a scuff-and-recoat may be enough. If it is peeling, bubbling or lifting in sheets, the bond has failed and patching usually doesn’t last; the old coating is ground off and a new system is installed. An installer can test the bond and tell you which applies.
Why garage coatings fail
- Poor prep: coating over unground, etched or dirty concrete.
- Hot tires: tires heated by driving can soften and pull up thin coatings.
- Moisture: vapor coming up through the slab can push a coating off.
- Thin product: some kits simply aren’t built for vehicle traffic.
- UV: some epoxies yellow or chalk in sun through an open door without a UV-stable topcoat.
Getting it done right the second time
Ask the installer to explain why the first coating failed and what they will do differently, especially the prep method and moisture testing. See how long an epoxy garage floor lasts.
